Code Blue Teams Train with PHIL
On May 31, CGRMC Code Blue teams had the privilege to train in the PHI Air Medical Mobile Intensive Learning Vehicle, affectionately named PHIL. This program is part of Air Evac’s community outreach education.

PHIL is an interactive physiological mannequin that is taken to different sites throughout the state. PHIL is run through a number of computer templates which include a pregnant woman, middle aged man, or an older adult. Air Evac trainers have the ability to set up a basic scenario and then allow the code team to work with the patient to assess their situation.

For example, one scenario began with a middle aged man who has been jogging on a warm day and comes into the emergency room with chest pain. Dr. Human ran the scenarios with the code blue teams, so he would ask the patient questions to assess the situation. The mannequin actually would respond to these questions, but the voice was generated by an Air Evac crew member who was outside the vehicle with a head set. The computer program allowed the mannequin to respond to the various treatments based on the scenario. In one case, the patient had not given the physician a complete list of medications so the treatment that was selected by the team led to a drop in heart rate, and then a code blue. Staff then had the opportunity to practice their CPR skills.

Outside of the vehicle, a large screen and speakers were available so that staff could watch the scenario as it played out inside the vehicle. The code blue teams included RN’s, ED physicians, and respiratory techs.

Staff seemed to enjoy the learning opportunity in a less stressful environment. The goal of PHIL is to provide scenario based education in a realistic environment to promote critical decision making and enhance skills.

Air Evac is scheduled to return on July 5 with PHILLIP, their child sized mannequin. This will give staff another unique opportunity to practice their pediatric coding skills in a safe environment.
