Staff Recognized for Academic Excellence
Every year, two graduating students from each of the three Central Arizona College campus’ are selected to represent the college on an All-Arizona/All-USA Academic Team. This year two CGRMC Pharmacy employees, Heather Marrow and Matthew Bertsch, were selected from the CAC main campus.
Matthew said, “Winning the All-Arizona Academic Team scholarship meant more to me than just a tuition waiver, scholarship and a medallion. It meant that someone recognized my academic achievements and the hard work that I put into school these past few years.”
Both received a medal of honor and a certificate signed by the Governor at a celebratory luncheon. The selected students earn statewide acclaim in the media and two years of paid tuition at a state university of their choice. In addition, each student is assigned to an All-Arizona/All-USA Academic Team. Heather was placed on the third team and received a cash scholarship of $500, while Matthew was placed on the second team and received a cash scholarship of $750.
Because the pay-off is considered to be substantial, the competition is keen. Each applicant must complete an application package, which typically includes demographic data, GPA, essays on a designated topics and letters of recommendation, as well as whatever else the national committee has designated as competition requirements. Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the American Association of Community Colleges and USA Today, the All-USA Team's national committee also establishes guidelines for criteria by which applications will be evaluated. Although applicants are not required to be members of Phi Theta Kappa, CAC designates the Phi Theta Kappa Advisor(s) at each campus to coordinate the application process, which includes selecting a team to evaluate the applications. The application requirements are somewhat different each year. In addition to achieving well academically, selected applicants must have contributed to their community and are able to express themselves well. Heather contributed more than 750 volunteer hours at the hospital before becoming an employee.
Heather said, “Winning the scholarship means the world to me because all of my efforts finally paid off. What a great way to start out my education at the University of Arizona!” The hospital is honored to have two of its staff members achieve this award. We wish Heather and Matthew all the best as they continue their education and pursue their careers. No doubt they will succeed in their efforts and continue to make CGRMC and the community of Casa Grande proud.
