Student Volunteers Off to a Great Start
On Monday, June 5, 2006, nine middle school and high school students went through a special student orientation to volunteer at CGRMC for the summer. Prior to that orientation, they had completed volunteer applications, submitted letters of reference and interviewed for the program. Several more students have joined the program as the summer has progressed.

The student orientation included an extensive tour of the hospital, as well as some “behind the scenes” looks at the laboratory (where they got to view colon cancer first hand), medical imaging, and the telemetry monitoring room.

Every effort was made to match students with their interests. Many of them are interested in careers in healthcare and wanted to experience the hospital setting first hand. Students were placed in departments that had requested student volunteers for the summer, as well as departments that were open to honoring specific student requests.

To receive a letter of recommendation at the end of the summer, students are required to complete forty hours of volunteer service, excluding orientation. Those students who complete sixty hours of volunteer service will be eligible for special recognition at the completion of the program.

Students are volunteering in the Laboratory, GI and Endoscopy Lab, Acute Rehab, Human Resources, ED Medical Records, Telemetry, Med/Surg, Finance, Patient Business Services, Gift Shop/Volunteer Services, Materials, Outpatient Rehabilitation, Employee Health, Wound Center, and Dog Therapy.

Hakeem Al-Kazak, a student volunteer in the GI and Endoscopy Lab and the Laboratory, states, “The staff has been great and willing to teach me about their jobs. I have really learned a lot. It has helped  encourage me to go into the medical field as a career. I am thinking about being a radiologist or neurologist.”

If you see these students wearing their blue student volunteer t-shirts in the halls or on your units, let them know how much you appreciate their hard work this summer! For more information on student volunteer opportunities, contact Karen in Business Development at 381-6571. Thank you to all the departments who took on these student volunteers.
