Wound Center Staff Receive Certification
The hyperbaric treatment team at CGRMC’s Wound Center received certification from the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology after successfully passing the exam which they took on February 11, at Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital. Donna Wilson, Larry Alexander and Mary-Kathryn Hughes received their certification after successfully passing the 120 question exam which took approximately two hours to complete.

Before they could even sit for the exam, they had to complete 480 hours of clinical, hyperbaric internship along with the Hyperbaric Medicine Introductory Course. This preparation was compounded by volumes of studying from textbooks and other publications from the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society. After a “quick review” before the exam, as Mary-Kathryn Hughes put it, they took on the challenge and fared very well.

They must recertify every two years by taking at least 12 hours of continuing education credits, six of which must be in undersea, hyperbaric or aviation medicine along with 100 hours of continued experience. The group decided to take on the challenge of becoming certified to assure they were armed with the most current practices in hyperbaric medicine resulting in the best treatment for patients.
